Design obstacles can be overcome with innovative thinking and versatile materials. Polystyrene foam is an example of one such material, as it has many favourable properties, making it suitable for many applications.

Here are some design obstacles that polystyrene, often called Styrofoam, has overcome in some of our previous projects.

Walk-In Showers, Steam Rooms & Treatment Spas

Walk In Showers

Walk-in showers, steam rooms and treatment spas are examples of how the favourable properties of EPS (expanded polystyrene foam) can be used to great effect. EPS was cut to create the bespoke design with its complex curved surfaces, as it resists water absorption and is stable. With the addition of a base coat render and fibreglass reinforcing mesh, the elements were painted with a tanking system, and finished with a mosaic tile.

External Areas

External Areas

Polystyrene foam is equally suited to being used in external areas - whether its seating for a plaza or an open area, an artistic sculpture or a garden feature. The raised garden planter didn't require any foundations to be excavated or any heavy back fill. The lightweight polystyrene elements were lifted by hand, rendered and then given a coloured finishing coat. This saved the clients time and money, as well as creating a unique feature for them to to enjoy.

EIFS & ICF

EIFS & ICF

Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS) and Insulating Concrete Forms (ICF) are growing in use and popularity as they exploit another key property as mentioned in their names, that of insulation. Polystyrene can act as both a thermal and acoustic insulator, in this example the walls of the building were clad in EIFS and the panels was CNC cut to create the sign embedded in the finished wall of a school sports hall.

Void-Foaming & Mould Making

Void-Foaming & Mould Making

Void-forming and mould-making are other examples of how this versatile material is utilised in the construction sector. Detailed and intricate shapes can created quickly without the need for specialist jigs or tooling. On this renovation project we were required to replicate the fašade detail on the balcony of this historic house. Using concrete and polystyrene formwork the balcony was restored to it's former glory.
